I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t find a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains water shutoff tap to stop all water to the home.

In the meantime, begin wiping up any water, place a bucket to catch any drips, and clear away significant items from the area. If the mains water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
