I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have taps that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have a tap below or beside the cistern. If you cannot locate a valve, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains water valve to cut off all the water to your property.

Once that’s done, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to get things sorted.

While waiting, clear away any significant things close to the leak, and clean up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.
