I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest access point or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the water main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there shortly to get things sorted.

While you are waiting, remove any important items close to the leak, and mop up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
