I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there promptly to get things sorted.

While waiting, clear away any important possessions from the area, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.
