I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main water shutoff valve for your home. If you are unable to locate the main valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.
