I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have service valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have a tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t locate a valve, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains water valve to cut off all water to the residence.

While you are waiting, remove any important possessions close to the leak, and clean up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
