I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main water valve for your property. If you’re unable to find the water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your house to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that is done, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there shortly to fix the leak.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important items close to the leak, and clean up any water or put a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
