I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting, clear away any significant possessions from the area, and clean up any water or put a bucket to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.
