I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

In the meantime, start mopping up any water, position a bucket to catch drips, and remove significant possessions from the affected area. If the property water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
