I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the water main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that’s done, give us a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there promptly to get things sorted.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant things from the area, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
