I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main water valve for your home. If you are unable to find a water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your home to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that’s done, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you promptly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant possessions close to the leak, and wipe up any water or put a container to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Find a length of string of some kind, and knot it around the faucet aerator so that it dangles down to the base of the skink or basin. The drips will slide down the string and flow off quietly.
