I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have a valve below or beside the cistern. If you cannot find a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains shutoff tap to cut off all the water to the home.

Once you have stopped the leak from getting worse, give our emergency plumber a call, at any time of the day or night. They’ll be there quickly to solve the problem.

While you are waiting, clear away any important possessions close to the leak, and mop up any water or put a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
