I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate the water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there shortly to get things sorted.

While waiting for our emergency plumber, clear away any significant items, mop up any water, and position a bucket to catch any drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

How can I stop the dripping noise temporarily so I can get some rest?

Find a length of string of some type, and knot it onto the tap aerator so that it hangs down to the base of the skink or basin. The drips will run down the string and flow off quietly.
