I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main water valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate the tap to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the home to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour day or night. We’ll be at your home as soon as possible to resolve the problem.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant things from the area, and wipe up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
